Curren$y - Rapper Weed -

Closed Session w/Curren$y: "Rapper Weed" from Ruby Hornet on Vimeo.

Closed Session is the newest addition to the RubyHornet content machine. The premise is simple, we teamed up with SoundScape studios, Chicago's premier recording studio and provide artists with beats from Chicago's top producers, give them an atmosphere tailored to their needs, get out of their way, and let them create. What we are left with is footage of the artist recording on their terms, as well as dope new music.

Each artist has a different process for recording, and for Curren$y we shut the studio down, told everyone to leave, and turned the lights low. We only went through a few Tony Baines' beats before Curren$y found the winner. He vibed with the instrumental for a couple minutes before reaching for pen and paper, and some other kind of paper, and then entered his zone. For many artists, 'I don't write my rhymes' is their favorite phrase, but we found the opposite to be true for Curren$y. Close ups of his rhyme sheet reveal cross outs, and rewrites, and he would scribble, recite, revise until he found exactly what he was looking for. After a few short hours he entered the booth, meticulously recording in a similiar fashion. Shortly thereafter, "Rapper Weed" was born.

We released the song last week, get it here, now check out the video. Also look for the next Closed Session featuring Truck North and Big Pooh to premiere soon.

Who is Frank Sinatra ?

Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American singer and actor.
Beginning his musical career in the swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra became a successful solo artist in the early to mid-1940s, being the idol of the "bobby soxers." His professional career had stalled by the 1950s, but it was reborn in 1954 after he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
He signed with Capitol Records and released several critically lauded albums (such as In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Come Fly with Me, Only the Lonely and Nice 'n' Easy). Sinatra left Capitol to found his own record label, Reprise Records (finding success with albums such as Ring-A-Ding-Ding, Sinatra at the Sands and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim), toured internationally, was a founding member of the Rat Pack and fraternized with celebrities and presidents, including President John F. Kennedy. Sinatra turned 50 in 1965, recorded the retrospective September of My Years, starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music, and scored hits with "Strangers in the Night" and "My Way".
Sinatra attempted to weather the changing tastes in popular music, but with sales of his music dwindling, and after appearing in several poorly received films, he retired in 1971. Coming out of retirement in 1973, he recorded several albums; scored a Top 40 hit with "(Theme From) New York, New York" in 1980; and toured both within the United States and internationally until a few years before his death in 1998.
Sinatra also forged a career as a dramatic actor, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here to Eternity, and he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Man with the Golden Arm. He also starred in such musicals as High Society, Pal Joey, Guys and Dolls and On the Town. Sinatra was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. Sinatra was also the recipient of eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Award, Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

I'm not famous or anything . You know ? I'm just a dope dude.
Maybe it's because of some of the things i say.

Who is Mack Maine ?

New Orleans, Louisiana, is the hometown of Jermaine "Mack Maine" Preyan. Growing up in the 17th Ward, the Hollygrove section of the city, Young Maine, as he was known then, always had aspirations for doing music. Fortunately, through his childhood friend, the now superstar Hip-Hop entity known as, Lil Wayne, those dreams have since come to fruition.

As the latest act to emerge from Weezy's fledgling Young Money Entertainment imprint, Maine, who cites, in no particular order, the late Soulja Slim, UNLV, The Hot Boyz, the whole Cash Money movement, 2Pac and Biggie as major influences, definitely looks to be the next rap sensation -- Welcome to the Mack Maine show!

Tell me when this musical journey first began for Mack Maine?

I first started back when I was a kid watching Baby and the Hot Boys record. I was around them all the time, so I started playing around with it; rhyming with kids around the hood, battling, making fun of people. I kept pursuing it, and eventually got serious with it.

So, you've actually been connected to Wayne pretty much your whole life?

I've known Wayne since we were kids. We were always cool.

Is that why you just went ahead with the obvious and signed to Young Money?

I was signed with a label called Infinity Records, and then signed a deal with a NBA player that didn't really work out. I shot a video with two unsigned rappers, and it went on BET Uncut and Wayne saw it. He called me, and didn't know I was a free agent. He thought I was already picked up. I flew out to meet with him, and it's been history ever since. We were always under the same umbrella though -- We been cool since way back.

Has the whole magnitude of this situation actually sunk in yet?

When I heard a song I was on come on the radio, that's when I knew I could take it to the next level.

From there, you officially became Mack Maine?

My real name is Jermaine, and people used to call me Maine. I used to be Young Maine, but there were too many "Youngs" out there. I've always had a way with the ladies, so the Mack came on and it made it Mack Maine -- Bitch, I'm Mack Mainnnnnnnne!

You also now serve as VP of the imprint, so what are some of your ultimate goals and plans for Young Money?

For everybody to go platinum or better! I want every artist in Young Money to be successful, and to be able to establish themselves as individual artists.

How do you categorize what it is that you do on the mic?

Real! I speak what's real. I got a catchy flow. I'm really versatile. I can change up my delivery on any beat. I can fuck with any genre. I rap on emotions, and rap on what I feel.

Give me a quick rundown of your resume -- What are some of your fave/standout joints that you've done?

The Knuck If You Buck freestyle is definitely the one verse that the fans remember the most. They still know every word when I'm performing it. "Young Maine for president, I'd probably paint the white house black if it was my residence." My favorite is a joint I did called Just Ventin', and the freestyle I did on the Put You On The Game beat. Man Cry, with Mistah Fab, is one of my favorites, as well as Throw It Back, with Weezy, where I did my funny "Stoopid Macknoopid" delivery. If y'all don't know who that is yet, you will find out. You got a little taste in the Every Girl video -- Stoopid Macknoopid is crazy!

What's the name of your forthcoming debut?

It was Mack Maine For President, but I couldn't get it off by the election. It's undecided still.

What can you tell me about your upcoming solo release?

I've worked with Nesby Phips, Don Cannon of course, StreetRunner of course. Those are my dudes who I know come with consistent heat. Da Bizness! I cannot forget Da Bizness, they got some fire! Shout out to them. But as far as the process, I don't sit down with them and tell them what chord to use next in their melody. If it's a nice beat, I'm gonna kill it. I get the beat, and I go off on it.

Where does your "open game" come from?

I rarely ever write. Everything you hear, it's freestyled off top. It comes from my chest, from my heart. I rap on experience. I rap on what I live, and what I know. I don't really sit down with a pen and write rhymes. I get in the booth and let off.

What's the formula for your success?

Never give up. Keep it 100 percent real with you and everybody around you. Don't try to change yourself to impress other people. Make smart decisions. Everybody is going to make mistakes, its how you learn from them and bounce back from them that builds character and dictates if you're built for this game. It's a rough game, a rough industry, but you got to keep going.

I'm hearing that you also have a strong interest in acting...

Yeah, acting, I'm interested in pursuing some movies. Any directors out there send your boy some scripts! That and being a businessman -- I've had the opportunity to learn the business aspect of the industry, which is something I enjoy and want to pursue.

Tell me about these two other side ventures; Kush Entertainment and Soothe Your Soul Music...

Kush Entertainment I started with my homie, T Hill. Shooting DVDs, and little interviews and stuff for rappers. He had to do a little bid, but he home now so it's on again. Soothe Your Soul Music is another label I just started. It's just getting on, but it's gonna be big.

On a serious note, are you happy with the state of rap music?

Yeah, it's cool. The fans are happy. I'm defiantly not mad with that. It's a proven fact in the midst of a recession and economy failure nobody wants to hear the sad reality of it. We want to cheer people up, let them take their minds off it. Make good enjoyable music. People are hating on Hip-Hop though. People are still out there spitting, it's just the listener is choosing to listen to other stuff. You can't get mad at the listener.

How do you make sense of all this illegal downloading that is blatantly ripping artists, like you, off?

It sucks, but it's part of the game. There's no reason to complain about it. You got to find a way to get around it -- Ring-tone money, digital download money, show money, publishing. People think because rappers aren't selling records they're going broke. There's rappers out there getting 100, 200K a show.

Outside of music, what are some of the other things you partake in?

I play ball, and I'll play any one of these niggas out there for 10 stacks! Besides hooping, I twitter sometimes, I chill at the crib, I mack all the time. I'm about to get back on my movie watching game! I don't have a lot of free time away from music.

Although it's still very early on, as far as your career goes, what has been the highlight to date?

Saturday Night Live season opener with Michael Phelps! How the hell did a real nigga from Hollygrove get on Saturday Night Live season opener with Michael Phelps? That shit crazy!

Wow! Well, looking ahead, what does your future hold?

I see myself in a big ass mansion in Hollywood ready to do my next movie. Shout out to my whole Hollywood click; Young LO, Cali, Raven Symone! Shouts out to Joelle Ashley, too! Nah, but I definitely want to be somewhere in Hollywood sitting on a big hill reading a script to my next movie.

As for now, has your "official" first single and video been selected yet? Still untitled debut album, scheduled for release when?

Not yet! Album will be out within the next year. It's gonna be a problem! I got like 200 songs right now, so I got to pick the right ones to make a classic.

In the meanwhile, are there any mix-tapes that you are currently working on? Or, guest appearances on other people's works? Also, is there a Young Money compilation coming down the pipeline?

Young Money album coming soon! I'm always down for working with people and doing features. If you want a feature, hit my man TZ at upfrontent@gmail.com.

You've been on the hugely successful I Am Music Tour -- How's that been going for you? You have any funny stories and/or anecdotes from your experience(s) out on the road?

Aw, mannnn, I do got a funny story. The last show was in Detroit, and I shouted out, "What's really good Chi-Town?!" Awwww man, that's the craziest feeling ever! Remember that Snickers commercial "Wanna get away?" Yeah, it was just like that, for real!

That is funny! So, what's actually to be expected from a Mack Maine performance?

A lot of energy, and a great time! If I'm in your city, you got to come out and see me. Young Money puts on a show!

Any additional shout outs?

Shout out to Weezy and the whole Young Money Fam; Gudda, Thugga, Streets, Twist, Chuckee, TZ, B.P., Drake! Drake got a mixtape killing the game right now! New Orleans, Tez Poe, all my fans, all my supporters, Luv da Luv!

Who is Shanell ?

Lil Wayne couldn't snag the "Prom Queen," but pulled one of the baddest Bees in the game. Never heard of Shanell aka SNL? Bet your favorite singer's favorite singer has. Shanell's resume is already what dreams are made of and as she helps Wayne put the finishing touches on his new project Rebirth, she's getting ready to rock.

Honey: People are now hearing about you and recognizing you from the "Prom Queen" video, but you're a familiar name amongst heavyweights in the industry. So, give us a little rundown of things we may have seen you in or heard you on and didn't know it was you.
Shanell: I write for a lot of people. I have a song on Danity Kane's album called "Key To My Heart", Kelis' album called "Aww Shit." I've worked with a lot of people that everybody knows. I used to work heavy with Ne-Yo and now I'm doing my own thing over here at Young Money.

How did you get started in the business?
Well, I went to a performing arts high school and I studied dance, theatre, and music. I started off being a dancer, but I never was completely satisfied with just dancing. I always felt like dancing and singing, writing. They all kinda go hand in hand. I took Natina's place in Blaque for a minute, if you remember that group.

"Boom like an 808"
Yeah, and that's when I really started writing a whole lot. I was writing and dancing on the road. I've danced for Jay, Ne-Yo, Bow Wow, 3LW, TLC and it was just like, "I wanna be up front! I don't wanna be behind anymore." So, I got with some producers in Atlanta— Shondrae, Maestro, who I still work with today and they're all on The Carter 3. Got with them and started working on my stuff and after Wayne heard my stuff he was like, "whatcha doin?" And was like, "why don't you just do what you wanna do?" And he's helping me make that happen.

Is Young Money considered a label or is it a crew? How do you describe Young Money and your position?
It's business, it is a label but it's also like a family. I've worked with a lot of different people and this place that I'm at right now, they're really like a family. They support you, it goes beyond just business. We have fun, we go to basketball games, we have parties and shit. Can I cuss? (laughs)

Oh girl, yeah! So, you said before you were working with Ne-Yo. Were you signed to Compound? Describe that working relationship.
I danced with Ne-Yo for two albums of his career and he heard my music as well and wanted to work with me. Ne-Yo always supported me and always believed in my writing and my artistry, but he and I decided that what you're doing is a lot different from what I'm doing. He still supports me and everything, but I had to find somewhere I can really express the kind of stuff I want to express and do the kind of stuff that I do.

How does it feel to have the co-sign of Ne-Yo and Lil Wayne and other really influential people in the business and being somewhat unknown and now going out on your own and taking claim of a position in the industry?
This tour that I just got finished doing, the "I Am Music" tour, was a major arena tour and that's thousands and thousands and thousands of people. Thank God Wayne trusted me to get onstage with him and perform in front of thousands and thousands of people. I've done my own shows, but it's never been that big of a venture. At my first show, when I got onstage and I looked out at the audience and I just like, "wow, this is what I've always wanted to do." Reaching all these different people and just letting people hear my music, my voice. It's amazing and it's amazing to have been able to work with so many people. Some people's biggest dream is to work with a Ne-Yo, or a Wayne, or an Usher, or Beyoncé and I've been able to do it. I thank God everyday.

How do you describe your sound and what should people expect to hear from you?
My sound is a fusion of all the the stuff I used to listen to when I was younger. I grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts and it was what you could call "hood," what you could call "ghetto." But, I still listened to Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, and Prince. I think by accident or subconsciously I just kind of fused everything I was listening to like the Hip-Hop stuff I grew up on and the other stuff that I listened to. So, my music is a mixture. I call it the black, white girl or the white, black girl— I don't know which way it goes. It's fusion and I think that now a days, the way that music is going every sound is fusing with the next. So, I think that I'm a spokesperson for that generation of [artist].

Are you currently recording and when can we expect to hear new music from you under Young Money?
Like Nicki Minaj put a mixtape out, I'm gonna put some stuff out. It might not be a full on mixtape, but I do wanna get the people something to say, "ok, this is Shanell's sound." We're recording now, I'm in Miami right now working on my stuff. When's it's gonna comeout? Hopefully, by the end of the year or maybe the beginning of next year. We're really focusing on pushing out Wayne's Rebirth album and he's also working on his next album Tha Carter 4. So, all of us are in the studio working on finishing that.

You're obviously in the "Prom Queen" video, but it's a little confusing because I thought you were the prom queen and then it sort of went astray.
[laughing] Noooo, let me explain.

Ok, explain the video.
There's a movie called Cry Baby.

Ok.
First of all, I wrote the song. We were in the studio and he was like,"write me something." We kinda sat down and came up with the concept. I'm a theatre kid [so I was inspired by] the movie Grease and the movie Cry Baby. It's about a guy who might not have been the most popular kid but not the lamest kid, but just somebody different trying to get with the popular girl. The popular girl turns him down for the jock or those popular boys. Then later on in life, the guy that she disses ends up being this popular guy and she's trying to get with him at that point and he's like "I'm cool." So, my role in the whole thing is I'm just this friend that grew up with him and went to school with him and watched the whole thing happen. I watch him get dissed by this girl and then later I get the guy.

Oh ok, well that reminds me of old Jenny Jones episodes like"From Geek to Chic" or "Drab to Fab." Do you remember those shows?
[laughs] I don't. I gotta look 'em up!

Jenny Jones used to always have these shows and it would be the girl who flew under the radar in high school or the guy who flew under the radar, and then they bring back their biggest crush. It's this big makeover show and then they come to show the crush that they're so hot now.
Exactly! That's exactly it.

You mentioned Nicki Minaj and she's also a part of Young Money. How do you feel about having another female artist there?
I think it's great and when me and her work together my whole thing is guys always support each other. Usually, in the past you've seen crews and it's mostly all guys and one girl. With this situation it's all guys and two girls. Most people would think that there'd be a problem but we're like we have to rep for the women and we have to support each other for the women just like how guys do. She's a rapper and I'm a singer, but we both rap and sing. We kind of help each other out with both areas of music and it's cool.

You're also connected to another powerful female. If people do a little Google search, they'll see that your sister is D. Woods formerly of Danity Kane. So, when I think of you two I immediately draw a comparison to Venus and Serena: two powerhouses that are trying to make one another better. Do you see each other that way? How do you describe your relationship?
Yeah, we support each other a hundred and ten times over. She supports me with what I'm doing and I support her with what she's doing. She teaches me a lot because she got into it a lot sooner than I did at that level. We sometimes compare ourselves to other teams of sisters.

Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen?
Right! And hopefully, at the end of the day we'll go down in the booksas power sisters like those other sisters.

Now, the other comparison I would draw to Venus and Serena are these bodies! Ya'll are definitely "blessed."
[laughs]

We're approaching summertime, folks are on their "get right, get tight" programs so give a little advice on how you keep that hip to waist ratio the way it is.
Man! Well, I workout everyday. Before a show I go to the gym, not too long though. I'll run for like 30 minutes and do some stuff on some weights, not heavy weights though. Just eat right, eat five times a day but small meals. When you're thick, you're thick. You just gotta make sure that at the end of the day that thickness doesn't become a problem.

Ok.
[interupts] I was really pissed off. Well, I don't know if I should even say this but fuck it. I was really mad at that episode [of Making The Band 4] and my sister, who's so humble...

Oh, you know I was about to ask you about Diddy's "two cheeseburgers away" comment.
Right, that was ridiculously uncalled for because she was in a group with four other girls that are very, very small. My sister never a day in her life has been overweight or been called fat or two cheeseburgers away from becoming fat. But, I think that when Diddy said that it put something on her that didn't need to be put on her. There would be people who would come up to her and be like, "oh my gosh you look so much smaller!" or "you've lost some weight!" She's never been any bigger or any smaller, that's how she's always been. It's crazy how somebody can say something with power like Diddy and people can't see for themselves anymore. That really bothered her and it bothered me too.

What advice would you give other Honey girls who wanna enter the business even with it being so critical?
You just gotta be really strong and really believe in yourself. I know that sounds lame because everybody says that, but you really have to believe in yourself. When you wake up in the morning and there's certain things that you wanna do and there's certain things that you believe in, don't let anybody tell you any different. It's like eating the apple and throwing out the core. You can take advice from people, but never put yourself down or not believe in what you believe in and that's what my sister did. She was like, "I'm not fat. I'm not overweight." And she held on to that. People are gonna talk abot me, people are gonna talk about everybody. Everybody has their opinions, but as long as you hold fast to your opinion you'll be alright.

What do you see for yourself in '09?
I see myself completing my project and reaching out to other artists, especially female artists. I have this thing called The Girls Club and I want to get with and write with a lot of female artists. That's one thing I want to accomplish and just use what God gave me to reach whoever it needs to reach and hopefully have an album worth of songs and music and ideas and stories that will help people or make people enjoy life and have fun.

Ok now, the either or game! You pick one that best fits your personality.
Ok.

Sneakers or Stilettos?
In '09, stilettos.

Hamburger or Hot Dog?
Hamburger.

Destination wedding or big elaborate wedding?
Big elaborate wedding. Wow, you just made me think about marriage! [laughs]

Leather or lace?
Lace!

SUV or convertible?
You know what, you're catching me at a changing point in my life.

That's what it's about! It's about those transitional periods but still being definite with your choices.
I'm a small girl, so I usually like SUVs but I think I'm liking the convertible.

Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles or Gladys Knight and Ron Winans' Chicken and Waffles?
Oh, I have to say Gladys and Ron's [friend screams "Yesss Atlanta!"]

[laughs] One last one, since I have to be a little messy. Danity Kane or Pussycat Dolls?
Shit! I'ma have to say DK, because my sister is DK all day if she's with those girls or not.

A Goofy Movie - Extremely Goofy Movie

Plot:

It is the last day of the school year for Goofy's teenaged son Max, who has a plan to shed his "Goof" label and impress his crush, Roxanne. Max and his two friends PJ and Bobby hijack the auditorium stage in the middle of Principal Mazur's speech, creating a small concert where Max performs while costumed as Powerline, a famous pop superstar (who is in a Michael Jackson/Bobby Brown mold). The performance succeeds in making Max a school celebrity, but Mazur puts it to a halt and the trio of friends are sent to his office.
While waiting outside Mazur's office, Roxanne talks to Max and they both agree to go together to a party that Roxanne's friend and student body president, Stacey, is holding to watch Powerline's latest concert on pay-per-view. Unknown to Max, Mazur calls Goofy while at work, (his job is a supermarket children's photographer), reporting Max's actions as "dressed as a gang member, your son caused the entire student body to break into a riotous frenzy!" Believing that Max's exhibiting behavior that will lead him to a life of criminality ending in the electric chair, Goofy decides it is time to re-establish his relationship with his son, which has drifted apart over the years.
Goofy decides to take Max on a fishing trip to Lake Destiny in Idaho, on the same route he and his father took years before. Max tries to dissuade his father, but is shoved into the family car, a yellow AMC Pacer Wagon, and the holiday begins, but not before Max visits Roxanne at her house to tell her the news. When Roxanne disappointingly mentions possibly finding someone else to go with to the party, Max quickly creates a lie claiming he and Goofy are going to the Powerline concert in Los Angeles and will be on stage with Powerline. Roxanne, though initially dubious, falls for it. Goofy and Max head out on their uneasy road trip, but it is not incredibly fun as Goofy hoped.
Max is humiliated at Lester's Possum Park, having an opossum leap down his pants and then dragged into a country dance by Goofy. They also watch an out-of-date country folk jamboree of animatronic possums (parodying The Country Bear Jamboree), which malfunction halfway through the show. They unexpectedly run into Pete and PJ; and are chased by Bigfoot during a fishing practice session involving Goofy's Perfect Cast technique.
While stranded in their car by Bigfoot, Max changes the road map in the direction of Los Angeles while his dad is asleep. The next day, Goofy pronounces Max as official navigator of the trip while they stop at a roadside diner, unaware of the change in direction. The two go places where Max or Goofy likes and the two rebound their relationship and have fun. Goofy later discovers the switched map when Pete overhears a conversation between Max and PJ, and feels shocked and betrayed.
Goofy and Max later approach a highway junction where left goes to Los Angeles, right to Idaho. In a panic, Max picks left. Not too happy with this, Goofy angrily stops the car at a mountain viewpoint but forgets to put the brakes on, which causes the car to go onto the road when Max leans against it. As the two Goofs pursue the car down the road, eventually landing in a river on the car, they get into an argument. Max clued in to his dad discovering the switched map, and stated he's not a kid anymore, and that he wants his own life. The argument concludes with Goofy saying that he just wanted to be part of Max's life as he grew, and Max explaining why he wanted to go to the Powerline concert in the first place. Goofy then tells Max he'll take him to L.A. just as the two approach a waterfall. Goofy tries to save Max's life by using a fishing pole, but the current sweeps the car and them off the edge. Max gets caught up in a tarp that turns into a parachute, saving his life. He then saves his dad by using the Perfect Cast technique.
Goofy and Max arrive in Los Angeles on the night of the concert, accidentally splitting up. Goofy is pushed into an electrical ball and flies out onto the stage where Powerline is performing his song. As convinced by Max, Goofy does the Perfect Cast technique in a freestyle version as a dance style, and everybody is impressed by it, including Powerline, who then also performs it as well. Max is chased by a security guard up onto the stage's lights, but Max crashes down onto the stage between Goofy and Powerline. The three break into dance with everyone cheering for them. Roxanne, Stacey, PJ, Pete, Bobby, and others watch the concert from various televisions surprised by their performances.
The next day, Goofy and Max pull up outside Roxanne's house in the remains of the car. Max reveals to Roxanne he lied to her about mostly everything but she instantly forgives him, revealing herself she has liked him for a long time, ever since he first laughed the classic "Ahyuck" which he was embarrassed about before. The two make a deal to not lie anymore, sealing it with a kiss. Goofy's car blows up and he flies through the air, crashing through the roof of Roxanne's house where Max introduces him to Roxanne.

Plot:

It is an important time in Max's life, for he is college-bound with his friends P.J. and Bobby. Believing himself to be free of his father, he strives to work together with his friends to become the top team at the college X-Games. Upon arriving, Max quickly gets himself noticed by "Gamma Mu Mu" fraternity sports team who are the reigning X-Games champions, in particular their leader, Bradley Uppercrust III. Bradley invites Max to join his fraternity, but Max refuses if he cannot bring his friends along with them. A rivalry starts between Max's team and Bradley's team, and they bet whoever loses in the finals will be towel-boy to the other.
Complications arise when Goofy is fired from his job due to an accident he caused. To make things worse, as Goofy only spent 3 years in college during the 1970s, he can't get another well-paying job unless he spends one more year to obtain a college degree. To his son's mortification, Goofy joins him at the campus to achieve the degree. Desperate to distract his father, Max talks him into joining the competing "Gamma Mu Mu" fraternity team, which works. Additionally, Goofy meets and befriends the college librarian, Sylvia Marpole, who shares his nostalgic love for the 1970s. Romance soon blossoms between Goofy and Sylvia, and they decided to go for a date that coming Saturday, which becomes a spectacular success with them dominating the dance floor with classic disco.
Although Max is initially supportive of Goofy's "distractions", tensions start to rise between them when Goofy beats Max in the first round during the X-Games qualifiers, though his success is due to luck and one of Bradley's machinations implemented on Goofy's skateboard. After the qualifiers, Max angrily snaps out and yells at Goofy to "Leave me alone and get your own life!!!". Max's rejection causes Goofy to lose his focus, forgetting his date with Sylvia and failing his first midterm. He eventually regains his focus and makes up with Sylvia, who then helps him study for his makeup exam, which he passed with straight-A's. Additionally, Goofy decides to quit the Gammas, not wanting to compete with Max at all, but once he leaves, he decides he should return his pledge pin, then he overhears that they are planning to cheat in the final X-Games events. Goofy tries to warn Max about this, but Max refuses to believe him.
At the X-Games semi-finals, Bradley and the Gammas repeatedly cheat in various obvious ways, but are not caught, eliminating all the teams besides Max's. Just before the final race, when the cheating Gammas get P.J. out of the way, Max apologizes to Goofy and asks him to join his team in order to avoid being disqualified for being one player short and Goofy gladly accepts. In the final race, one of Bradley's cheating maneuvers backfires when a giant wire-and fabric X-Games logo falls on Tank, one of Bradley's minions. Bradley flees for safety, but Max and Goofy decide to help Tank escape. Tank then turns on Bradley for ditching him, while Max wins the X-Games final, achieving a grand-prize trophy.
Once the term is over, Goofy receives his college degree and leaves Max to his own devices at college. Goofy and Sylvia drive off at a beach, implying that their future will be together.

Madison puts brakes on grass-roots skateboard park

Local skateboarders put in about $300 worth of concrete ramps, cleared away trash and built themselves a tidy little skate park on city land near the Yahara River recently. They just didn’t tell the city.

The boarders have now run afoul of the City Parks Division, which Tuesday confiscated the boarders’ tools, including a trash can, trowel and brooms, and chipped away at the concrete ramps.

Ben Wilson, a skateboarder from Madison, said Madison city officials have long promised but failed to deliver a park for skateboarders. "We need a place to thrash that’s good," said Wilson, who works at a Monroe Street takeout restaurant.

But City Parks Superintendent Kevin Briski Wednesday said the boarders are done at that site.

"Anyone can’t come in and start building their own park (on city land)," Briski said. "There’s codes and rules and policies that regulate anything built on city land. At the end of the day, for it to be a public structure, it has to be designed and engineered to meet the safety standards for such a facility."

The do-it-yourself skate park echoes similar efforts across the country, most notably in Portland, Ore., where locals built a skate park without permission under a bridge. It opened in 1990 and was later sanctioned by the city.

The Madison site, which can be seen from the East Johnson Street bridge over the Yahara River just west of First Street, had been used as a campsite by homeless men, Wilson said.

The concrete base had previously served as the floor of a boathouse, Briski said.

Ald. Satya Rhodes-Conway, 12th District, who represents the area, said Wednesday she will try to arrange a meeting between parks officials and the skateboarders. Briski said he would welcome the boarders’ input in designing a skate park as part of the planned Central Park on the Near East Side.

"I really wish they had come to me and the Parks Division first," Rhodes-Conway said.
